Gombrich, Ernst Hans, Sir (1972), b. Vienna, March 30, 1909, art 
historian. Emigration to London in 1936, worked at the Warburg 
Institute (director from 1959-1976), lecturer at various universities 
in England; special focus on iconography, art theories of the 
Renaissance and the inclusion of psychoanalytical approaches in art 
history research ( History of Art). Given the Order Pour le Merite in 
1976; Austrian Decoration of Honour for Science and Arts in 1984, L. 
Wittgenstein Prize in 1988, Austrian State Prize for merit in 
promoting Austrian culture abroad in 1993.
