Grass Skiing, sport developed in Germany in the 1970s; world 
championships have been held since 1979, the grass skiing section 
within the Austrian Skiing Association was established in the same 
year; in 1985 the sport was recognised by the International Skiing 
Federation FIS. Along the lines of Alpine Skiing, competitions are 
held in the categories super-G, giant slalom, slalom, parallel slalom 
and team events. Austrian skiers predominate, and the Austrian Ingrid 
Hirschhofer won no fewer than 16 titles in world championships in the 
period up to 1998.
