Greenpeace, international organisation for environmental protection 
founded in Vancouver (Canada) in 1971. Greenpeace Austria was 
established in Vienna in 1983 and currently maintains regional groups 
in almost all the federal provinces. With a budget of 
ATS 41.5 million, approximately 40 full-time workers and 
several hundred voluntary staff (figures for 1994), Greenpeace Austria 
currently canvasses for restricting CO%%sup 2/% emissions by industry 
and transport, environment-friendly energy policies, alternatives to 
the industrial use of chlorine and other halogens, sustainable 
agriculture and forestry and tries to prevent the construction and 
operation of nuclear power plants in close proximity to Austrian 
territory.
