Greek Catholic Church, religious community founded by the West 
Ukrainians (called Ruthenians in the Austro-Hungarian Empire) living 
in  Galicia and Lodomeria; though Catholic in faith, it uses the 
Byzantine rite and the Slavonic liturgical language and has its own 
hierarchy. Since 1784, its central parish in Austria has been St. 
Barbara in Vienna (1%%sup st/%  district). In 1819 it was subordinated 
to the Metropolitan Bishop of Lvìv (then Lemberg), in 1935 it 
became part of the diocese of Vienna. Approx. 4,000 members in Austria 
(1995).
