d. Graz (Styria), Dec. 9, 1915, criminal court judge, then university 
professor in Prague and Graz, founder of modern criminology. Central 
figure of the "Graz School" of criminology; founded the Department of 
Criminology at the University of Graz and Museum of Criminology in 
Graz. Author of pioneering works in the fight against crime, founder 
of the "Archives for Criminology".
