Grossarl Valley, province of Salzburg, southern side valley of the 
River Salzach in the Pongau region; it is drained by the Grossarlbach 
stream. The Grossarl Valley is the geological border between the Hohe 
Tauern and the Niedere Tauern mountains. It starts at the Arlscharte 
Pass (alt. 2,252 m) and extends to the villages of Huettschlag 
(alt. 1,030 m) and Grossarl (alt 924 m), the  
Liechtensteinklamm Gorge and to the point where the Grossarl Valley 
meets the Salzach Valley, between the villages of Plankenau (alt. 
756 m) and Niederuntersberg (alt. 741 m). A passage into the 
Maltatal valley leads over the Arlscharte, there is a pass into the 
Murtal valley at the Murtoerl (alt. 2,260 m).
