Gyrowetz, Adalbert, b. Cěske Budějovice, Czech Republic (then Budweis), Feb. 19, 1763, 
d. Vienna, March 18, 1850, composer. Initially personal secretary 
of several members of the aristocracy (numerous travels), at the same 
time higher instruction in music. From 1793 in Vienna, musical 
director at the Court Theatre and conductor (1804-1831); important 
representative of the Viennese singspiel between the Classical and 
Biedermeier periods.

30 operas and singspiels ("Agnes Sorel", 1806; "Der betrogene 
Betrueger", 1810; "Der Augenarzt", 1811; "Robert oder die Pruefung", 
1813), ballets, over 60 symphonies, string quartets, sonatas for the 
piano, 11 masses. - Autobiography, 1847.
