d. Vienna, Aug. 25, 1987, studied German. 1935-1938 university 
professor of Germanic antiquity and philology in Kiel, 1938-1945 in 
Munich and from 1957 in Vienna; in 1971 given emeritus status. Notable 
contributions to the studies of the history of Germanic religions, of 
the Germanic sacred kingdom and of historical phonetics and phonology 
(evolution theory).
