b. Vienna, Nov. 26, 1811, 
d. Vienna, July 30, 1892. Diplomat, travel writer. From 1833 in the 
service of the Austrian state chancellery, where he was promoted by 
Metternich, whose illegitimate son he was alleged to be. 1849-1859 in 
diplomatic service in Paris, from 1860 Police Minister; 1865-1867 head 
of the mission to the Papal Court, but failed in his attempt to 
conclude a new concordat. In his writings he advocated a renewal of 
the Habsburg monarchy. His reports on his extensive travels show him 
to have been a highly educated connoisseur of the arts.
