Haan, Matthias Wilhelm von, b. Vienna, Sept. 17, 1737, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 10, 1816, law scholar. President of the "Court 
Commission for Political and Judicial Matters of Law". His "Penal Code 
for Western Galicia" (1796) was the foundation of the Austrian penal 
code of 1803 and greatly contributed to the completion of the ABGB 
(General Austrian Civil Code of Law) in 1811.
