Hagenberg im Muehlkreis, Upper Austria, market town in the district of 
Freistadt, alt. 440 m, pop. 2137, area 
15.06 km%%sup %%sup 2/% /%, situated in the southeastern part of 
the Muehlviertel region on Feldaist river. - Formerly a farming 
community, Hagenberg's economic activities are now based on a software 
technology park (which is the chief employer, accounting for 65% of 
the working population), research institutes of Linz University and a 
Fachhochschule.- First documented mention in 1139, market town since 
1991. Parish church, originally a Protestant chapel, Baroque decor 
(1728); 16th century palace on the site of a medieval castle (today 
accommodates research institutes and the town administration); Baroque 
palace chapel with paintings by B. Altomonte.
