b. Bad Goisern (Upper Austria), Jan. 26, 1950, law graduate, 
politician (Austrian Freedom Party, FPOe). 1970-1974 federal chairman 
of the right-wing student association "Ring der Freiheitlichen 
Jugend", 1976-1983 provincial party secretary of the Austrian Freedom 
Party in Carinthia, from 1983 provincial party chairman, from 
1983-1986 Landesrat, from 1989-1991 Landeshauptmann, degraded to 2nd 
deputy Landeshauptmann until 1992 following a statement by him about 
the "proper employment policies in Hitler's Third Reich", leader of 
the Freedom party group in parliament since1999, member of the 
Nationalrat 1979-1983, 1986-1989 and from 1992-1999; 1986-1989 and 
1992-1999 party chairman of the Austrian Freedom Party. Federal party 
chairman of the  Freiheitliche Partei Oesterreichs (Austrian Freedom 
Party) from 1986-2000. Under his leadership the Austrian Freedom Party 
grew steadily in popularity until the OeVP-FPOe coalition government 
was formed in 2000.
