Haidinger, Wilhelm von, b. Vienna, Feb. 5, 1795, d. Dornbach 
near Vienna, March 19, 1871, mineralogist and geologist, 1840 
director of the mineral collection of the Imperial and Royal Chamber 
of Court for Coinage and Mining, initiator and in 1847 member of the 
Academy of Sciences in Vienna, initiator and 1849-1866 first director 
of the Imperial Institute of Geology ( Geologische Bundesanstalt), 
founder and in 1855 first president of the Geographical Society in 
Vienna. The first geognostic outline map of the monarchy (printed in 
1847) was produced under his leadership in 1845, invented H.'s 
magnifying glass named after him. A mountain range in Australia is 
named in his honour.
