Harrer, Heinrich, b Huettenberg (Carinthia), July 6, 1912, alpinist,
explorer. In 1938 was the first to climb through the North Wall of the
Eiger (Switzerland), in 1939 exploratory expedition to Nanga Parbat,
during World War II was interned in India, fled to Tibet and stayed in
Lhasa until 1951, personal friend of the Dalai Lama. Expeditions to:
the Andes in 1953, Alaska in 1954, Ruwenzori in 1957 and to New Guinea
in 1962/1963. Awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in
1995. The H.-H. Museum in Huettenberg (Carinthia) was established in
1982.
