b. Dvorce, Czech Republic (then Hof), May 28, 1839, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 14, 1907, philologist, university professor, director 
of the Court Library; as Minister of Education (1900-1905) he 
standardised the organisation of schooling for girls by introducing 
the six-form  Maedchenlyzeum (secondary school for girls emphasising 
modern languages). As vice president of the Academy of Sciences 
(1900-1907) he intensified international co-operation in the field of 
research. Founder of the "Oe. Volkslied-Unternehmen" for the promotion 
of Austrian folk songs and the "Moderne Galerie".
