b. Fuerth near Nuernberg (Germany), Jan. 8, 1889, 
d. Munich (Germany), June 30, 1977, (film) actor; after various 
engagements in Germany (especially in Berlin) 1924/25 also performed 
at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna, 1926-1934 at the 
Burgtheater in Vienna and at the Salzburg Festival, originally was an 
actor of heroic roles, numerous interpretations of Goethe´s 
Faust under and with G. Gruendgens, who took him to the Staatstheater 
Berlin in 1935; after World War II complex character roles (incl. 
characters by E. O´Neill); from 1955 often guest actor at the 
Burgtheater; recited works especially by Goethe and Schiller; film and 
television engagements.
