b. Vienna, Nov. 8, 1877, 
d. Vienna, March 13, 1952, geographer. From 1918 taught in Basle, from 
1927 in Freiburg im Breisgau, 1931-1950 university professor in 
Vienna, he was co-founder and chairman of the Commission for Regional 
Planning and Reconstruction at the Academy of Sciences; president 
(1937-1951), and later honorary president of the Austrian 
Geographers´ Society. Co-publisher of specialist journals; 
studied geomorphology; later also devoted himself to political and 
human geography, a pioneer of regional planning and one of the most 
significant human geographers in the German-speaking area.
