b. Lancefield (United Kingdom), March 20, 1812, 
d. Vienna, June 8, 1897, mechanical engineer, locomotive builder, 
1838-1882 manager of the engineering works set up by Wien-Raaber Bahn; 
regarded as the founder of the Austrian locomotive building industry, 
constructed various machine tools, e.g. the hydraulic forging press 
(1862), which made it possible for the first time to forge heavy 
machine pieces in a stamping press (now on display at the Technical 
Museum Vienna).
