b. Vienna, Jan. 30, 1822, 
d. Vienna, March 20, 1899, geologist and palaeontologist, brother of 
Julius von  Hauer, regarded as one of the founders of geology as a 
science in Austria. From 1849 the first geologist at the Geologische 
Reichsanstalt (school of geology), 1866-1885 director of this school, 
1885-1896 director of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. Had 
extensive research interests, especially in the Mesozoic era in the 
Alps and its fauna. Co-founder of the Geographical Society in Vienna 
(F. v. Hauer-Medaille).
