!!!Hauptschule

Hauptschule (regular secondary school), introduced in the bigger 
cities in 1774 as an elementary school offering a wider range of 
subjects (J. I.  Felbiger), 1869 renamed "Buergerschule" 
(citizens´ school) in the  Reichsvolksschulgesetz 1869, 1883 
reduced to 3 years (6%%sup th/%  - 8%%sup th/%  grade), 1927 increased 
to 4 years (5%%sup th/%  - 8%%sup th/%  grade). Constituted an 
important step in the development of the Austrian education system by 
introducing streaming (first and second stream,  Allgemeine 
Mittelschule, from 1985 streaming in German, mathematics and modern 
languages,  Gesamtschule), gradual adaptation to the lower level of 
Gymnasium schools. In the big cities it is becoming less and less 
important.
