Haus, Styria, market town in the district of Liezen, alt. 772 m,
pop. 2,244, area 81.76 km%%sup 2/%, winter tourism (238,249 overnight
stays), situated in the upper Ennstal valley, south-east of the
Dachstein massif. - Golf course, sports grounds; rural home economics
school; Schladminger Tauern cable car to the Krummholz mountain refuge
(1,840 m) on the Hauser Kaibling mountain (2,015 m, site of
a transmitter of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation), Kaiblingbahn
mountain railway leading up to the Stuebelboden mountain; venue of
World Cup skiing races; wood-working industry (sawmills, joiner's
workshops), button factory. - First documented mention 928, centre of
the Salzburg part of the Ennstal valley until 1803; in1750 fire
destroyed a large part of the town; parish church (first documented
mention 1074, oldest parish in the upper Ennstal valley), rebuilt
1750-53; parsonage (16%%sup th/% century core); deaconal museum
in the former tithe barn (since 1964); former offices of the Salzburg
stadtholder (16%%sup th/% century core, extensive alterations).
