b. Vienna, May 8, 1899, 
d. Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), March 23, 1992, political economist 
and social philosopher, Nobel prize for Economics in 1974 for his 
pioneering work on monetary and business cycle theory. In 1927 founded 
the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research (today Institute of 
Economic Research, Oesterreichisches Institut fuer  
Wirtschaftsforschung). 1931-1950 taught at the London School of 
Economics, then in Chicago, Freiburg and Salzburg (1970-1974). Founder 
and main proponent of modern liberalism. Severely criticised the 
system of planned economy.
