b. Brno, Czech Republic (then Bruenn), Sept. 7, 1816, 
d. Vienna, Aug. 5, 1880, dermatologist. 1849 university professor in 
Vienna; put the research of skin diseases on a scientific basis, 
creating the terminology and setting up a separate department of 
dermatology (which he headed from 1845) in the Vienna General 
Hospital. Introduced the waterbed treatment and discovered the cause 
of scabies. Made Vienna the centre of dermatological studies. 
President of the Austrian Physicians' Society.
