Heidentor, near Petronell-Carnuntum, best-known Roman monument in 
Austria. Remains of a 2-storey 4-pier construction, probably built in 
the 4%%sup th/%  century A.D. Its original purpose is unknown; it is 
generally held to be a burial site, but it could also have served as a 
triumphal arch.
