!!!Heilpädagogik

Special Needs Children, Education of, remedial education for
handicapped children (or specifically for mentally handicapped
children) with a long tradition in Austria. V. E. Milde was the
first to formulate a therapeutic system in his "Lehrbuch der
allgemeinen Erziehungskunde" (1811/13), practitioners such as G.
Guggenmoos were among the first to achieve positive results.
J. D. Georgens and H. M. Deinhardt ran an institution for
handicapped children in Baden (Lower Austria) and popularised the term
"Heilpaedagogik" (i.e. special needs education) in Austria. Numerous
institutions were set up (e.g. Sonderschulen) promoting the education
of severely handicapped children of school age. In 1911 a department
of therapeutic pedagogics was set up at the Paediatric Department of
the University Hospital in Vienna, the first of its kind in the world.
In Austria, educators and the medical profession continue to cooperate
closely (Inter-factulty Institute for Special Needs and Remedial
Education).
