Heimatkunde (homeland studies), study of the history and contemporary 
features of one´s place of birth or residence and its immediate 
vicinity (municipality, parish) and their effects on the local 
population from various points of view. Heimatkunde, formerly a 
separate subject in elementary school, today forms part of a broader 
subject, "Sachunterricht" (general studies). It is usually taught with 
the help of chronicles of local history, geography, important events, 
etc. available in almost every municipality as well as regional 
magazines and museums of local history and culture.
