Local Heritage Museums (Heimatmuseum; museums of local history and 
culture), term used since the beginning of the 20%%sup th/%  century 
for museums of local or regional character displaying exhibits of 
historical, traditional and sometimes also scientific value. Around 
two thirds of the total of approx. 2,000 Austrian museums and 
collections (1994) fall into the category of local heritage museums.
