Heimatvertriebene (= displaced persons): term for the German-speaking 
population groups (ethnic Germans) expelled mainly from the former 
successor states of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy at the end of World 
War II; they either settled in Austria (approx. 240,000) or moved on 
to Germany and settled there.
