Heiss, Wolf-Dieter, b. Zell am See (province of Salzburg), 
Dec. 31, 1939, neurologist. Studied in Vienna; later did research 
in the USA and Sweden. From 1978 head of the clinical scientific 
branch of the Centre for Cerebral Vascular Research of the Max Planck 
Institute for Brain Research in Cologne and Director of the Department 
of Neurology of the City Hospital Cologne-Meierheim; since 1982 
Director of the Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research; since 
1985 Director of the Department of General Neurology of the University 
of Cologne. About 300 publications, particularly in the field of brain 
research (strategies for strokes, brain tumours, dementias and 
epilepsy).
