b. Hittisau (Vorarlberg), Feb. 2, 1883, 
d. Neu-Goetzens (municipality of Goetzens, Tyrol), May 29, 1968, 
historian and expert on folklore. University professor in Leipzig 
(1935) and Innsbruck (1941). Co-founder of the atlas of Austrian 
folklore and initiator of research into the local history of 
Vorarlberg, together with the historian O.  Brunner he founded the 
idea of "folk history". Developed cartographic methods for the purpose 
of folklore research.
