b. Vienna, Dec. 25, 1831, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 28, 1877, conductor and composer. From 1863 member of 
the court orchestra, from 1866 conductor of the court orchestra. 
Director and conductor with the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in 
Vienna, 1869-1875 conductor at the Vienna Court Opera, 1870-1875 its 
director; from 1858 taught at the Vienna Conservatory. Important 
personality in Viennese musical circles, discovered F.  
Schubert´s "Unfinished Symphony" and promoted A.  Bruckner. In 
1899 the choir of the Friends of Music Society established the H. 
Medal, which is awarded for 25 years of membership.
