Hernstein, Lower Austria, municipality in the district of Baden, alt. 
438 m, pop. 1,305, area 46.59 km%%sup 2/%in the Piesting 
valley, north of the Hohe Wand mountain. Economic activity centred on 
agriculture, some tourism; sand quarry. Hernstein Palace (now a 
seminar hotel), 1856-80 alterations by T.  Hansen in the English 
Gothic style, paintings by C. Griepenkerl, C. Rahl, E. Bitterlich and 
examples of the arts and crafts from the late 19%%sup th/% 
 century. Hernstein Fortress ruins behind the palace, keep from 
the 12%%sup th/%  century
