!!!Hochmoore

High Moors represent the last stage of moor formation in areas with a
large amount of precipitation and are characterised by water with a
low calcium content. Predominant vegetation: peat mosses, cotton
grass, heather. Their location is limited to a few areas at a certain
altitude in the Alps and the Waldviertel Muehlviertel regions. Alpine
high moors still show an accentuated relief. The high moors of the
Bohemian Massif (Waldviertel, Muehlviertel) formed in depressions on
water-impermeable crystalline rocks. Most of them have, however, been
destroyed by drainage and peat cutting. High moors are still fairly
abundant in the province of Salzburg.
