b. Wuppertal (Germany), March 25, 1902, 
d. Vienna, Dec. 2, 1990, Kammerschauspieler, director, theatre 
manager. 1927-1946 performances at the Dresden Schauspielhaus; 
afterwards at the Stadttheater Stuttgart as actor, artistic director 
(1950) and manager (1952-1957). From 1959 member of the Burgtheater 
company in Vienna (cultivated language and impressive performance in 
character roles), 1968-1971 director of the  Burgtheater. From 1960 
also some film and television engagements. 1972 honorary member of the 
Burgtheater. Awards: 1975 Kainz Medal, 1977 Albin Skoda Ring, 1982 
Grillparzer Ring.
