Hofkirchen im Muehlkreis, Upper Austria, market town in the district 
of Rohrbach im Muehlkreis, alt. 601 m, pop. 1,427, area 22.69 
km%%sup 2/%, small commercial and industrial town north of the Danube 
valley, close to the German border. Shoe factory, turbine 
construction, wood-working industry, some summer tourism. First 
documented mention around 1200; Baroque parish church (1704-39), high 
altar (1727), rebuilt after a fire in 1764. Market village with houses 
typical of the Muehlviertel region and town hall (with arcades, 
stairs), pillory (17%%sup th/%  century), fountain (1675). 
Marsbach Palace (1561-68), Haichenbach ruins; Kerschbaumerschloessl 
palace. Rannariedl castle, keep and great hall from the 13%%sup th/%  
century, extensions from the 16%%sup th/%  century. Falkenstein ruins 
in the Rannatal valley, first documented mention 1140, owned by the 
Falkenstein family until 1227, extensions from the 16%%sup th/% 
 century, 1571 fire, fell into disuse after 1860; parts from the 
13%%sup th/%  century (keep, great hall) and from the late-Gothic 
period (water tower) have been preserved. In the vicinity, Ranna power 
station (built 1925, 19 MW, municipality of Neustift).
