Hohenwerfen, fortress in the province of Salzburg, part of the 
municipality of Werfen in the district of St. Johann. The fortress, 
situated high above the market town of Werfen, was built in 1077 and 
extended 1122 to form the main fortress building, 1526 partially 
destroyed by rebellious peasants, 1530-1585 extensions. 19%%sup th/% 
 century in decay, from 1898 restored by Archduke Eugen, 1931 
partially destroyed in a large fire, rebuilt. Large fortress with 
gatehouse, keep, great hall, outer ward, several towers, arsenal, 
chapel with Romanesque columns and Baroque altars. Now museum and 
ornithological station for birds of prey.
