administration, education, traffic and economy of the western
Waldviertel region, numerous schools, situated on the Goellersbach
stream. - District commission, district court, local tax office,
employment services, surveying office, local Chamber of Farmers,
Chamber of Labour, Economic Chamber, Lower Austrian Chamber of
Agricultural and Allied Workers, local health and social insurance
office, Federal winery inspectorate (branch office), agricultural
district authority, environment protection agency, village
revitalisation association, provincial hunting association,
residential home for young people run by a female religious order,
relief centre, counselling centre of the psycho-social services,
hospital, Sonnberg prison, public workshop, municipal waterworks,
sports hall, Weinlandmesse wine fair (every August), spring market
(every March); schools: Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium
secondary schools, Gymnasium school of the Archdiocese of Vienna,
vocational school, Hoehere Bundeslehranstalt (college), commercial
college, technical college, technical college for food technology,
nursing school, federal pedagogical institute for Lower Austria,
agricultural training college. High-level service sector (about
71 % of all 4,426 employees 1991, in particular personal, social
and public services, commerce); manufacturing: wood-working industry
(sawmill, parquetry), potato products, pump factory, large
book-binding company; some tourism (20,977 overnight stays),
viniculture (in the surrounding area) and wine trade are particularly
important. First documented mention 1135 as "Holerbrunen", granted
town status in 1908; parish church (Romanesque core, Gothic
construction 14%%sup th/% century, Baroque alterations in the
2%%sup nd/% half of the 17%%sup th/% century); old mill
(17%%sup th/% century, now town museum); Aspersdorf parish
church (built 1730 by J. L. v. Hildebrandt); modern
subsidiary church (1970-72); column dedicated to the Virgin Mary
(1681).
