Wood Construction: For centuries timber was more widely used as a
construction material than stone, but hardly any wooden buildings have
survived in the cities, one reason being the danger of fires ( Fires).
In the country wood was particularly important in the construction of
farm buildings Farmhouse Types in the Alpine regions; both log
construction and post-and-beam construction with brick walls were
used. In certain areas of Upper Austria (western Muehlviertel region
and upper Inntal valley) farm buildings with ventilating grilles can
be found. The occasional wooden bridge can still be found in Austria
(e.g. Panzendorf, east Tirol, 1781). Apart from the traditional use of
wood in carpentry it is becoming more and more important in modern
architecture. Not only large buildings (halls) are built of wood, but
also residential estates such as the housing estate built in Bad
Hofgastein in 1984/85.
