Wood Construction: For centuries timber was more widely used as a 
construction material than stone, but hardly any wooden buildings have 
survived in the cities, one reason being the danger of fires ( Fires). 
In the country wood was particularly important in the construction of 
farm buildings  Farmhouse Types in the Alpine regions; both log 
construction and post-and-beam construction with brick walls were 
used. In certain areas of Upper Austria (western Muehlviertel region 
and upper Inntal valley) farm buildings with ventilating grilles can 
be found. The occasional wooden bridge can still be found in Austria 
(e.g. Panzendorf, east Tirol, 1781). Apart from the traditional use of 
wood in carpentry it is becoming more and more important in modern 
architecture. Not only large buildings (halls) are built of wood, but 
also residential estates such as the housing estate built in Bad 
Hofgastein in 1984/85.
