Hubmaier, Balthasar, b. Friedberg near Augsburg (Germany), after
1480, d. Vienna (executed), March 10, 1528. Theologian, cathedral
preacher in Regensburg, turned Anabaptist. Worked until 1525 in
southern Germany, 1526/27 in Nikolsburg and Austria, where the
Anabaptist movement spread rapidly. He advocated the right to military
action and was publicly burnt at Erdberg near Vienna.
