Huemer, Johann, b. Raab (Upper Austria), April 18, 1849, 
d. Reichenau an der Rax (Lower Austria), Sept. 20, 1915, 
classical philologist; 1897-1915 head of the department of 
didactic-pedagogic matters of secondary schools in the Ministry for 
Cultural Affairs and Education. Explored Latin literature of the 
Middle Ages available in Austrian libraries and, as official of the 
Ministry, especially influenced the development of the  Realgymnasium, 
a type of secondary school emphasising science and modern languages, 
curriculum reform, fairer examination regulations and stressing the 
importance of physical education.
