d. Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), April 27, 1938, philosopher.
Studied mathematics, astronomy and philosophy (e.g. with F.
Brentano), habilitation in 1887 as mathematician, from 1901 professor
of philosophy in Goettingen, 1916-1928 in Heidelberg; subjected to
oppression during the last years of his life because he was of Jewish
descent (deprived of his title of 'professor' in 1936). Founder of
phenomenology and important philosopher of the 20th century, teacher
of M. Heidegger.
