International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, founded in 1957 with 
headquarters in Vienna. Special organisation of the UNO for the 
worldwide control of nuclear plants and the Non-Proliferation Treaty. 
Supervisors carry out controls in about 60 states (e.g. Iraq 1992/93). 
Organs: General Conference of the 153 signatories, Board of Governors, 
Secretariat. - Activities: Promotes co-operation in nuclear technology 
and research as well as the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the 
exchange of scientific technical experience through support 
programmes, supplies technical material and services, prepares 
guidelines and recommendations concerning reactor safety, radiation 
protection and the physical safety of nuclear material.
