From 1903 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna; 1908-1918 participated in important exhibitions at the Secession; together with O. Kokoschka and E. Schiele was a prominent member of the group of artists called "Neukunstgruppe". 1915-1918 fought as a soldier in World War I; severely wounded.
