b. Litomerice, Czech Republic (then Leitmeritz), Feb. 7, 1765,
d. Vienna, April 7, 1858, theologian and statesman. In 1790
Professor of Moral Theology and (from 1794) of Pastoral Theology at
the Graz Lyceum, from 1803 consultant for the system of education and
religious foundations in Styria, from 1815 "Hofrat" and consultant for
studies and censorship in Vienna, from 1829 provisional state
councillor, 1831-1848 permanent state and conference councillor,
consultant for religious matters, from 1835 also for courses of study.
J., a moderate representative of Josephinism, felt that Church
activities in public as well as religious life in general should be
under some form of state control.
