!!!Jauner, Franz Ritter von

Jauner, Franz, Ritter* von, b. Vienna, Nov. 14, 1831, 
d. Vienna, Feb. 23, 1900 (suicide), actor, conductor, theatre 
manager. 1854/55 at the Vienna Burgtheater, then in Hamburg and 
Dresden. From 1872 manager of the Vienna Carltheater, which reached 
its heyday under his management, 1875-1880 manager of the Hofoper 
(1878 closed première of the "Ring des Nibelungen" by R. 
Wagner, first performance in German language of "Carmen" under the 
direction of G. Bizet; G. Verdi conducted his "Requiem"). In 1880 J. 
took over the management of the  Ringtheater in Vienna, which was 
destroyed by fire in 1881, 1884-1894 artistic management of the 
Theater an der Wien (brilliant performances of operettas by Strauss 
and Milloecker, 1885 première of the "Zigeunerbaron"). 1895 
stage director, then again manager of the Vienna Carltheater. Because 
of his extravagant productions he contracted large debts, which 
finally drove him and his wife E. Krall, a singer at the court Opera, 
to suicide.
