Johannes von Nepomuk, Saint, feast day May 16, b. Nepomuk, Czech
Republic (then Pomuk) around 1350, d. Prague (Czech Republic),
March 20, 1393. As Archiepiscopal Notary and Vicar General of the
Archdiocese of Prague he defended the rights of the Church and thus
drew upon himself the hatred of King Wenceslas IV, who ordered him
tortured and drowned in the river Vltava. His statue on Charles´
Bridge in Prague has often been copied and is found on many bridges
elsewhere, also in Austria. 2nd patron of the diocese of Salzburg.
