b. Bruck an der Leitha (Lower Austria), Nov. 20, 1815, 
d. Vienna, May 25, 1876, army commander. Participated in the wars of 
1848 and 1859, 1866-1869. From June 1874 until his death "Commander of 
the General Staff of the Entire Armed Forces", 1866-1868 also Minister 
of War, 1869-1874 commanding general in Graz. Reformed the army after 
the defeat at  Koeniggraetz in 1866.
