d. Vienna, April 24, 1974, printer and politician (Austrian Social 
Democratic Party, SPOe); brother of Rudolf  Jonas. 1932-1934 secretary 
of the SDAP (Social Democratic Workers' Party) of the Floridsdorf 
district of Vienna, 1935-1936 arrested, 1946 district head of 
Floridsdorf, 1948-1949 City Councillor for Food Supply and 
Construction, 1951-1965 Mayor of Vienna, 1952-1953 member of the 
Bundesrat, 1953-1965 member of the Nationalrat, 1965-1974 President of 
the Republic of Austria. His term of office was characterised by his 
cautiousness and sense of responsibility in maintaining a balance 
between the interests of the democratic political parties.
