b. Graz, Styria, Sept. 3, 1929, politician (SPOe) especially committed 
to cultural issues. 1970-91 member of the provincial govenment of 
Styria, Deputy Governor from 1985; since 1976 President of the   
steirischer herbst festival, founded   styriarte in 1985; promoted the 
decentralised development of Styrian cultural activities in a 
multiplicity of fields. Since 1972 President of the Austrian Chess 
Association, high-ranking official of the World Chess Federation 
(FIDE).
