Koerner, Theodor, b. Komorn (Slovakia), April 24, 1873, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 4, 1957, general and politician (SDAP and Austrian 
Social Democratic Party, SPOe), during World War I chief of staff at 
the Isonzo front, 1918 Department Head at the Office for Military 
Affairs, 1924 forced to retire owing to his critical attitude, joined 
the SDAP (Social Democratic Workers´ Party), member of the 
central governing body of the Schutzbund (Social Democratic Defence 
League), 1924-1934 member of the Bundesrat. In February 1934 advised 
the SDAP against violent resistance to the Austrian fascist 
dictatorship, imprisoned 1934 and 1944. 1945-1951 Mayor of Vienna and 
member of the Nationalrat, 1951-1957 President of Austria. As head of 
state mediated in political conflicts, encouraged cooperation between 
the major parties and stepped in to prevent a joint government with 
the Union of Independents (VdU, later FPOe, the Austrian Freedom 
Party), although some of the OeVP supported this. T. K. endowment fund 
for the promotion of science.
